We've never played any Pikmin titles, and give this a very excited and firm 5 stars/100%.
I am playing with my 7 nearly 8 year old daughter; this is the first game where she can actually play co-op without making things MORE difficult for me (blocking my path, messing with camera angle, not having the skill for certain things etc). With her on the pebble pitcher we are really enjoying the game.
I am completely addicted and wont rest until we 100% the game.
Its cute, its clever, it feels very free. At the same time there are challenging moments. We love the characters, my daughter made a sudden realisation about something before I did which we both squealed about and are excited to see if we are correct.
The tutorials are fine, playing as a parent with kid in tow this is absolutely a perfect gaming experience. We've played...a lot together. Five of the Marios: Sunshine, Odyssey, Bowsers Fury, Super 64 and Galaxy, Yoshis Crafted World, Luigis Mansion 3, My Brother Rabbit, Super Luckys Tale, Crash its About Time, Kirby Forgotten Land, Costume Quest 2, Beacon Pines (yeah, whoops not a kids game so much),many hours of Mario Party and Mario Kart...and Pikmin 4 is already waaaaaaaaaaaaaay up near the top of that list SPECIFICALLY from the experience of being a parent playing with my kid in tow. Not single player, not multiplayer: parent with kid who wants to be a part of things too. Pebble pitcher? Perfect.
