I really disliked this film contrarily to two friends who found the movie emotional and this told me to watch it. Personally, I agree with most negative comments I read about Deep Sea and it’s not because I watched it with my kids. Nope, I watched it on my own as I tend to be careful with what I show my kids. First, to be honest, I struggled to stay awake and fought to finish the movie so I could make my mind properly. It’s never a good sign. And look, I have lived in Asia, watched a lot of animation, as well as many Chinese (and Hongkonguese films from back then) so this is right down my alley, but I couldn’t stand this one. I found the movie utterly creepy and cringey. Despite the vivid colours that seem to have been produced for a 4K TV demo, the final product is overly gloomy. Really! It felt so dark and glossy. The characters and their lifeless yet over-active faces gave me the creeps and they are all mostly awful people. I can’t believe people in China can as a whole be that bad of a bunch. The whole undersea restaurant storyline is a mess and the final message feels really mundane and falls flat in my eyes. Man, I wish it were so simple to help people suffering from depression. Final thoughts, I wonder if the producers and the director wanted to make a kid movie (directed at Chinese kids with suicidal tendencies?) since there are obvious attempts at childish humour (not working) and cute merchandising (though I found the otters creepy) but please don’t think about having your younger kids watch this wreck of an animated movie. And if you have the choice, you might want to avoid it as well as I really don’t see what you could gain from watching deep sea.
