The aliens should have been harvesting humans for food. The Tim Robbins character rang false. The ending was awful. I liked the train on fire, the crashed airplane, and the alien eye searching for earthlings in the cellar. I wanted to like this film so much more, as I respect Spielberg’s body of work. All in all, a disappointment but not a disaster.

Even by the standards of American films made 75 years ago that were filled with wartime cliches, this retread manages to somehow take these cliches to an even lower level. How any filmmakers today could make the horrors faced by the crew of USS Indianapolis boring and insignificant is beyond belief — but they somehow managed to do it. I gave it two stars only because the actors were able to get through their performances without throwing up.
