Turning Red was.. err.. interesting. The film is about a young girl named Mei who is in her early stages of her life. It kinda has the same idea as another one of Pixar’s films Inside Out (which I personally liked better than this movie). I think it’s sorta a mix of Pixar’s Inside Out and Disney’s Enchanto because the whole family has powers (except they have the same ones) and (similarly like Riley) Mei is in her teens trying to figure out who she wants to be.
I think this movie was overrated and not as great as I thought it would be. Firstly, Mei in the movie was way too obsessed with boys. She had like 5 crushes and personally I think girls shouldn’t be thinking that boys are cute that young. I’m actually slightly older than Mei and I’ve never even had a crush on someone so I think she’s slightly unrealistic.
I also thought the idea of her having “puberty” wasn’t a great idea. I understand it in the beginning for comedic purposes but it’s kinda part of the whole movie and I was hoping it would be more of a family movie instead of a coming of age movie. I understand it’s not really a “boy movie” anyways but I was hoping girls and boys could watch it because we haven’t had a great movie in a long time and this movie is just another one a boy would not really be interested in.
One of the things I did like was the message it sent. The vibes I got from that movie was that family was a very important thing but sometimes parents need to let go. Kids grow up and parents need to respect that, but kids also need to remember all their things parents have done for them.
Overall I personally didn’t think it was a cinematic masterpiece or anything but it’s pretty decent if you are in to giant red pandas in their teen years or something (???). I wouldn’t recommend but it’s not up to me whether you watch it or not. :)
