What are your dreams? How passionate are you about them? And how far will you go to achieve them? Andhagan attempts to answer these questions through the tale of Prashanth’s and Simran’s characters, a talented, passionate pianist and a fiercely ambitious actor respectively. Prashanth is refreshingly natural, both at playing the piano and in portraying the various traits - vulnerability, charm and resourcefulness - demanded by the role. Simran brings energy, a sense of cunning and tremendous screen presence to an unusual and non-traditional role. While the two main leads shine in their roles, the scenes where they come together on screen are the show stealers - so engaging, so gripping that the tension was palpable in the movie hall. Behind the scenes, it feels like this movie must have been a labour of love. Mr Thiagharajan has thoughtfully put together a renowned cast and extracted expert performances from all of them. It is also apparent that Preethi Thiagharajan and the Andhagan team have paid plenty of attention to detail, from the top notch production values, editing and cinematography. On the surface, Andhagan is a fast paced black comedy thriller. But it also operates on deeper levels, offering metaphors about life, ambitions and the consequences of one’s actions. You may want to watch and rewatch the movie to get all of its messages. I do recommend going in without spoilers - I went in blind about the plot, and emerged with my eyes open about the joys of a well crafted, well acted movie.
