Riveting, gripping, thought-provoking, chilling, disconcerting, redemptive, disturbing and achingly profound - this is truly a must-see film. What seems at first like a quiet chamber piece explodes as it confronts some of the bigger existential and ancient philosophical/theological/moral questions such as loss of faith ("the dark night of the soul"), the sanctity of human life and the point / absurdity of existence against a backdrop of contemporary issues such climate change, corporate greed and terrorist acts. Ethan Hawke's central performance as the tormented angst- and cancer-ridden priest grappling with his faith in private while seeking to console others is compellingly on-point.
