Holly Black's skill in prose is remarkable. She portrays the darkness in the novel better than "twilight". The novel is certainly unique in the way that it is written, with excerpts from pieces about death. She shows us death in the wordly way the living can glimse of it. "The Coldest Girl in Coldtown" would've been rated a 4 star if it weren't for the unneventful boring bits of the novel. It was an effort to continue reading.

Kiera Cass has proven time and again her mastery in the craft of writing. Eadlyn is a relatable flawed character and the book shows her character development -- how she overcomes her fear of vulnerability and pushes through her boundaries of comfort. My concern for Eadlyn's series was that the protagonist American from the first three books of the series has suddenly become flat. The same goes for Maxon. It would've been better if they hadn't lost their depth and if they hadn't placed the entire burden of running a country to their ninteen-year-old. I think I would've liked the book more if they cared more for Eadlyn.
