The gameboy advance might arguably be the best handheld ever made, even years after the switch. It isn’t oversized and it’s library is up there with the snes. The gba is pretty much a mobile snes except the gba being a 2000s handheld was chasing trends of its time. First person shooters don’t work on the gba, heck they don’t even work on the switch unless there’s a hefty amount of aim assist. The hardware and button mapping on the gba make fps games a failure to launch on this device, Serious Sam advance is a perfect example.
Serious Sam advance has terrible frame rate, unreliable hit detection, migraine inducing sound design and terrible controls if it wasn’t obvious. The one saving grace this game has is personality, the spirit of Serious Sam is still intact. The Toy Story font, beheaded Kamikazes, sirian werebulls(imagine trying to dodge them with gba controls), the classic weapons are all here. This is enough to elevate it above the other hogwash fps games on gba which is a low low bar. If you insist on playing this dastardly game just play it on emulator with save states and remap the controls, there’s no reason to play on native hardware unless you’re a collector.
