This movie perpetuates many ableist ideas about autistic people, which isn't surprising, considering the main character (who is supposed to be autistic) is played by a neurotypical actor, and the movie is directed by someone neurotypical. Sia worked with Autism Speaks, a group known for its cruelty towards autistic folks, as one of her primary sources of information. In addition to this, the piece portrays autistic people as constantly needing help and relying on family members. While this is true for some people w/ autism, the movie centers so much around the main character's reliance on her sister. Essentially, if Sia really cared about the autistic community, she would have actually spoken to us instead of speaking over us.
