To say I’m a Partridge fan would be an understatement. I truly believe Alan Partridge and Steve Coogan’s masterful embodiment of the role to be one of Britain’s greatest comedy characters - ever. Mid Morning Matters, I’m Alan Partridge, Alpha Papa and more are true examples of comedy writing and performance at its absolute finest.
Stratagem, however, fails on so many levels and as a colossal Partridge fanatic I find this distressing, because I can’t believe that I could watch an AP performance and not be moved to tears of laughter. I also feel guilty giving anything with Alan in it a less than favourable review.
I don’t know if it’s the format or venue but for some reason Stratagem fails to deliver on that perfect Partridge formula, somehow falling flat and feeling forced. It lacks the feeling of spontaneity that makes Mid Morning Matters so good and it lacks many of the other facets that have made Partridge such a comedy tour de force.
I don’t know what went wrong but Stratagem is not proper Partridge. It feels like a cheap poorly done parody of Partridge and for that reason I can’t review it positively.
