In the last 30 years of playing games i have had a stronger and stronger fleeting feeling. The feeling that games are getting worse. I feel that game designers like ubisoft, bethesda, activision and other such companies have complied to what they believe is what people want. They make games that are 'MASSIVE' but empty, the 'GRAPHICS' are amazing! but theres no solid gameplay. Levelling systems that feel empty, with games that try to be 'realistic' but fail at simple mechanics of a 'brutal slash to the neck', to which enemies turn around and one hit you. Empty shooting mechanics that have not changed since 1999. The feeling that you are playing the same level on repeat, just manipulated with 'slightly harder enemies and different weapons'. I am so tired of overwhelming huge maps with nothing to do, dire gameplay that feels like your doing a choir.
In reality, no one wants the ‘most realistic graphical game’. No one wants ‘huge maps that feel like your going to the super massive shopping centre half an hour away because your wife said ‘it has all the best products’.
Expedition 33 is not any of this. It is what I have been longing for, for so long. While other games are 3 or 4 stars, this game truly deserves a 5 star rating. This game is so freggin enjoyable, making tasks a desire and longing to do. Fun tasks and an anticipation of what happens next, accessing new areas of the map of what is hidden and the levelling up system is so enjoyable. I desire to level my characters. The gameplay, despite it being turn based is surprisingly enjoyable. They have thought long and hard, sat down and thought “how can we actually make this game fun” as opposed to desiring to ‘sell as many copies as possible’. I cant even know the reasons why this is so good – but it is. It starts out a bit slow, but as you get into you realise this game has so much more depth than you would of ever thought.
The story line is good, not amazing. I really enjoy the interactions with the NPC’s. not long and drawn out. I know when they have finished – when they repeat the same thing again. However, one thing this game is not – is realistic. But it works because its not meant to be. This game brings back the incredibly good concepts back from the 1990’s and early 2000’s. This is why this game is a breath of fresh air.
