I honestly feel that a lot of criticism comes from folks who read the books and can't wait to flaunt that by pointing out everything the show gets wrong. So here's my advice: Ignore all that noise, drop all expectations, and just allow the series to show you what it's got — you will not walk away disappointed.
The writing is simply brilliant, every episode contains details that make more sense on a second watch, little incidents that foreshadow events or clues scattered throughout that point at something lurking just out of sight.
The build-up and release of tension in this show is simply magnificent, the high-octane scenes reach out and pull you in. Even in scenes involving just dialogue, you begin to feel and dread the things you hear; the calculated yet flamboyant manner in which plot points are revealed, it's glorious, haunting.
Any interest in science-related topics will of course help you better appreciate the magnitude of the events taking place, because a lot of it happens at the fringes of our currently 'established' physics — so a lot of the science in the show is either true, or hasn't been proven false yet (no spoilers here but there are things depicted in the show that could definitely be possible in a few hundred years). Being aware of that amps up the tension in a lot of scenes, because the creators cleverly take advantage of actual irregularities once observed in real-life particle accelerators — so the things taking place feel even more relatable!
Honestly, if you're looking for a story that explores existential questions, it's going to be very hard to do better than 3 Body Problem.
