I have added this to my list of books I wish all New Zealanders, but especially my fellow Pākehā would read. Bariz covers the history of Afghanistan, long term impacts of child sex abuse by a family friend to the sense of dislocation of being a Muslim migrant in NZ just before 9/11, to his tumultuous teenage years and the petty crime that lands him in prison at age 18. The prison system is designed to dehumanise its inmates but Bariz makes the decision to not be a victim of this and turns his life around. And he does.
