Absolutely awful. No construct, no direction, flakey storyline... I could go on.
The blurb suggests a hard-hitting reporter, father issues, arms deals... it's a mishmash of cliché ideas thrown together with the backing of either Hollywood inheritance money or ill-backed LA money.
Director Dee Rees is also credited with "Mudbound" which I have not seen but have in my list to watch.
Therefore with no bias or basis for comparison, I am judging this movie alone. My 30+ years of review and analysis advises anyone yet to view, not to bother - it's not worth your time.
REVIEW IN BREIF AS FOLLOWS:
Hathaway - as weak as she is - is probably at her peak here. Affleck is clearly trying to distance himself from comics, there are no clear reasons otherwise to take on this script/ project. Dafoe, an institution... we see his performance in this production with hope, through rose-tinted glasses. However, even he struggles to produce.
A sad sight to see on all fronts. Don't waste two hours like I did (on my birthday). There are many better social issue dramas or films based on books, far, far better than this.
