I love Turkish dizis for the amazing acting of the characters. So many of them make me believe and relate to the characters. However, this one, that is so widely praised, landed in disappointment.
Kerem Bursin is an amazing actor and so are the supporting cast. Hande Ercel cannot match that level of acting and comes across as if she is acting in a high school play with her one dimensional monotone acting.
But the biggest disappointment is the writing. Look I understand that real world logic and rationality won't apply to a dizi. But whatever world the dizi is building, there has to be some rationality or consistency right?
If Eda is so upset with Serkan for not telling the truth about their family histories, then why on earth will she think it is okay to not tell him about Ferit sharing the pictures with Kaan, or her grandmother's blackmail, or the fact that she has a child with him that she has not disclosed for 5 years? If someone is so hell bent on truth must be told in such a black and white way, then why are they doing exactly what they accuse the other person of and break up with them?
Eda straight up goes for the softest spot against Serkan saying his family's actions is going to make her impossible to be with him when her grandmother was blackmailing her. But even if she had to go along with the blackmail, does she have to hurt him in the process? And what does it say about her family where she chooses to hurt Serkan purposely? Like do the writers have no clue on how to write a conflicted woman's character?
Eda's character is written in such a violent way. She is abusive, cruel, uncaring for no reason to Serkan. Her grandmother blackmails her so she breaks up with Serkan. Fine. This is still in contradiction to what she chastized Serkan earlier for, that he should have told her the truth and then let her decide how she wanted to move afterwards. She didn't give him the same respect that she expected. But knowing that Eda's character is still in love with Serkan, what is the reason for the extra layer of cruelty when she tried to break up with Serkan and afterwards. She works with someone that he has dissolved business relationship with. She hides the working relationship. She takes offense to Serkan having a business dinner while she is also on a dinner with someone that Serkan distanced himself. She finds out that Selin is pregnant and doesn't share with Serkan. Apparently she is more loyal to Selin that to the love of her life. Serkan has no idea why she refused him and pulled away from him.
Honestly, the writers think that because Hande Ercel is pretty, she is entitled to behave as a hurtful brat in her character and people will still eat it up, because of her looks. I know it is a dizi and not supposed to be taken as seriously as I am taking it, but just think that there are so many women who think this is a version of romantic love when it is toxic, unhealthy, and full of lies and deception. Absolutely disgusting.
To these writers, Hande is either irrational, violent, aggressive, hysterical woman, or lovesick, or just plain hurtful or manipulative. And they had the audacity to put a line in that says, "If you love a woman despite her stupidity, then you know it is true love." It is clear how poorly these writers think of women. Very disappointing.
