I have no idea why the remake is receiving so much hate!
Disney has long struggled with the image of its female protagonists, and Mulan has always been a great film. The remake, while having the same essence, tweaks some of the details, which, in my view, make it more teen friendly. Sure, the funny Phoenix in the midst of training was amusing in the former movie, but this one has a more realistic touch to it. I love the addition of the female villain, it really gives a boost to the emotional appeal as a whole, rather than a typical big evil Mongol dude.
I also appreciate how the romance was a lot more tamped down this time, with the hero being solely Mulan for most of the part.
While the original will remain a family favourite, the new version is also a masterpiece!
