Progressive rock is often criticized for self-indulgence, where outstanding musicianship serves no real musical purpose other than demonstrating outstanding musicianship. But that is not this album.
This album is the ultimate example of incredible musicianship being employed in the service of equally incredible songwriting. The sonic creativity and emotional depth created by this particular group of musicians, at this particular moment, is unmatched. I've been listening to it for 45 years, and it is still a stunning, beautiful achievement. It doesn't age...at all.
Listening to the opening track in particular has almost a ritual-like feeling. When it is over, you feel like you've been on an incredible journey. Even if you end up in the same place you started, you now see things very differently, and far more positively. It's a great elevation of the spirit.
