I loved this movie!! But ... it's not Dune, more like Duneish.
Let me explain. I'm a purist. I've been reading and reading Dune since I was 12 years old. I've watched and rewatched every movie, every miniseries. I've been both dismayed and completely awestruck by movies' and miniseries' interpretation of the original work.
This movie is visually stunning. The actors are well cast and perform their roles superbly. The special effects are so well done, so as to not appear to be special effects. The plot is generally Dune, and is satisfying. All-in-all, this is one helluva movie.
What's lacking, and makes the movie Duneish and not Dune, is the lack of Dune's many subplots and themes. Baron Harkonnen's sadistic homosexuality is missing. The Fayd character isn't present. The great love between Jessica and Leto isn't portrayed. Paul's internal struggle seems non-existent, and he instead appears to be reactionary.
Again, all that said ... I LOVED this movie. I know I'll be watching it for years to come. I can't wait for Part 2!
