I can't speak for this movie as a standalone production. As a die hard Sopranos fan I was eager to watch the film. It gives you a brief history and sets up for how Tony came to be. For the reviews saying that it seemed like people were playing parts. They were, they had to live up to the original actors and their mannerisms and they did just that. I feel like David Chase would never end the story there with so much more to tell. Maybe that is why he signed that 5 year deal with HBO? It wasn't deep enough I've read? They had to pack an entire family tree into two hours and it left me wanting more. They barely got into how Tony became the man he was in the start of the series or his relationship with Carmella. That isn't what this movie was supposed to be, but I do hope we get that opportunity. There was a nostalgia there that never would have worked had it been played by anyone but his son, and that is why it does work. It doesn't have to be better than the original.
It's a mob movie, we all know David Chase has more up his sleeve. This is the journey to it. "My father was in it. My uncle was in it. Maybe I was too lazy to think for myself.” - Tony Soprano
