This movie is painfully relatable. In my opinion, it perfectly illustrates what it is like to be a teen in the 21st century. Nadine, the main character, is unlikeable and raw. She almost never makes the right decision, she's cringe and rude. But somehow, it perfectly embodies what if really FEELS like to be a teen. The truth is, most teens are unlikeable like Nadine, and that's okay.
This movie reminds you that you're not the only person in the world and that everyone around you is going through something. Nadine only sees the world through her lens and her issues, and struggles to empathise with others. This is honestly what it feels like when you're just a kid, you feel like you're the only one suffering or not understanding the world around you. It's isolating and exhausting; especially, when you haven't found your people yet.
I also really enjoy the end of the film, where Nadine learns that she actually isn't the only person who has problems. Her mum is still greatly grieving the loss of her husband, her brother is under a lot of pressure and Erwin's parents don't care enough. When she finds out her teacher has a family, I think this tonal shift starts to become apparent. A person she deeply relates to, has a life and family; something she doesn't think she can have within her own life.
I think people don't like this film because they haven't been a teen in this way. That's okay. It's also okay to not always know the answer and struggle to find your footing.
Great movie.
