I've never seen a game adaptation that didn't generally suck...like, a lot. I grew up playing video games and have watched some of my favorites get destroyed because someone thought that veering away from the story in an attempt to, eventually, make more money somehow. It rarely ever comes even close to decent. Take the movie House of the Dead for example. The director thought it'd be a great idea to include some of the actual 64 bit game footage during more than one fight scene. If you haven't seen the train wreck that is House of the Dead, don't. YouTube it to get a taste if you have to. Spoiler alert - it tastes bad.
Anyway, all that to say, for the first time in a long time, I am in love with a series with this type origin. Pedro Pascal is indeed Joel in all his grumpy old man-ness. And, even though I didn't think Bella Ramsey was a good casting pick for Ellie, she absolutely hit it out of the park. Plus there are cameos aplenty from other amazing actors like Ron Swanson...I mean Nick Offerman.
So yeah, not only is the acting amazing, but the action is exciting and totally nerve-wracking exactly when it means to be. Top all that off with being funny as hell, jam packed full of Easter eggs for the OG fans, and following the games already amazing story with an unmistakable reverence for the source material, and you have this masterpiece.
Put what you're doing down and go watch it now.
