Smart. Insightful. But, very irritating to read. A jumble of different voices, all constrained by the sanctimonious, liberal white South African view of the world.
When written, this novel may have engaged Western readers in the moral issues confronting South Africa. Reading it in 2024, The Conservationist feels trite and self important.
The agonising over the plight of indigenous South Africans, seems somehow to justify the plight of White's losing their grip on power. Colonialism was good for those with the guns. It's time to stop asking the world to feel sorry for the invaders when their power runs out.
