The messages about racial inequality speak for themselves. But on a different level, there is the story of two boys who do not fit in, both gifted in their own ways with talent and curiosity beyond their peers that shakes the status quo simply by them being their authentic selves. Not to minimize the racial and class inequality, but there was also the authenticity of these two young people that was intolerable to others around them. On the racial front, the way they portrayed how 'far along' each boy was in their racial/class privilege (or lack thereof) rang true to my own experiences (I am the same age) and the wisdom of my elders who made sure I knew where I came from and my obligation to others who had not been given their seat at the table yet. I say watch this film twice; there is more there; it just isn't spoon-fed to the audience like a typical Hollywood movie.
