I normally don't rate shows, but I have to try and undo some of the ratings I've seen. I've read all the PJO books. The first series, second, RR's spinoff series, all of them. Since I was a kid to now. I've gotten my cousins in on the series.
I think what a lot of these reviews have to deal with is either nitpicking or representation. For the former, I'll just say that RR is a producer. These books are old, and maybe he wants to put in some slight changes to make people like me, like us, those who know every word, surprised and engaged. Because if it was a carbon copy of what I read time and time again, would I really be happy? Can TV do better than my imagination and memories? Maybe we give RR credit, for trying to bring to life HIS vision he shared with us, while tossing in some new things for us to enjoy and be surprised with.
For the Representation, I honestly don't care. It was never what the characters looked like for me, it was who they were. I'm mixed race, but I found myself in all the various characters of the book regardless what they looked like, because I focused on who they were, not what they looked like. Did I enjoy the little bits of the storm grey eyes, seaweed hair, etc? Sure. But what I enjoyed the most was the banter, the way these characters acted, etc. If RR wanted to select the best actors he believed embodied his creations, then the only way to do that was to be color blind. How a character in RR's book acts has nothing to do with their skin, so to only select the most "look alike" character would be doing a disserve to selecting the best "alike" character.
