This books gently tears apart the glossy American picture by revealing the other end of the economy where people are pushed to the streets, unable to afford the huge housing prices and lack of savings thanks to the spending culture. Many encountered in the book are the victims of 2009 crisis where the finances evaporated and how life has been impacted since then. An important takeaway, is how the retail capitalists are exploiting these Van dwellers, making them walk ~20 miles in their warehouses in a heightened physical exertion and making them more prone to repetitive stress injuries through endless barcode scanning. The narratives of some amazon warehouse workers, saying how they feel overwhelmed by the merchandise surrounding them, most of which are single use disposables, attests to the amount of material waste we are producing these days, oblivious to the environmental impacts.
