I was expecting more nuanced storytelling. Although the cast is impressive, the characters are on the whole pretty two dimensional. Especially the villains. Far too much explicitly shown that could have been hinted at if the writer truly believes the mining tycoon character needed to be any worse than he already was. Every single character from the church was irredeemably evil, which was more than heavy handed, it became a series of caricatures. I expected much more from the franchise. I need to truly care about the characters, all of them, not just the “good guys.” Our American history is filled with the good, the bad, and the ugly. We don’t want to shy from truthful storytelling, but neither do we want to paint with such a broad brush that we lose the complex humanity in characters that should be much more interesting.
