Two episodes in, so far:
- The characters are meh, there’s potential but there’s nothing super interesting with them yet. Not a lot of personality or repertoire or interesting relationships at play.
- The dialogue is messy but mostly serviceable. There’s some bad exposition spots that are pretty rancid; characters telling the other person their own backstory just for the audience, etc…
- The action is neat, and more deliberate than most of the other D+ Star Wars shows, but still awkward in certain shots. The Jedi refraining from whipping out their super-lethal weapons at literally every opportunity, while probably boring to some, is a nice touch in my eyes; that’s characterization at the expense of spectacle, plain and simple.
- The acting is alright. The lead actress portrays two different twin characters pretty well.
- The mysteries are interesting, and although I think the first episode reveals a bit too much at the end, there’s still more questions that this plot continues to introduce. I genuinely don’t know what to expect next, or how this will all play out, which is rare for a Star Wars project.
There’s too many 1-star reviews given by people that don’t seem to have given the show a chance. The prior marketing and interviews for this show were absolutely embarrassing, but, two episodes in, there’s been absolutely 0 instances of “pronoun” messiness, men-hating, anti-white-racism, Mary-Sue-ness, or even justification of the dark side / deconstruction of standard morals. Absolutely none. From what I can tell with the first two episodes, this isn’t the propaganda sludge pipe that the creators constantly implied it would be.
As someone who hates every other Disney+ Star Wars show that I’ve seen (which is all but Andor), I implore people to give the show a try. It may turn out surprisingly good; I see that as equally likely to it crashing down in flames in the future.
