Are you a teenage fantasy enthusiast who wants to delve into the world of heaven and hell? Or, even better yet, are you looking for a movie that gives childhood fairy tales a heartfelt twist? Next time you pop to the cinema on Saturday night, check this out!
The film is directed by an American producer, Paul Feig(FEEG), who has directed famous movies such as Ghostbusters, and Bridesmaids, which both earned several Oscars and Academy Awards.
The stunning film adaption is based on the best-selling book series The School For Good and Evil. The first novel, The School For Good and Evil, takes place in Gavaldon. Gavaldon(a fictional place) is the main home of Agatha and Sophie(the two main characters). It is a small town surrounded by an endless and dangerous wood. Every four years, two children are kidnapped by a mysterious entity named the ‘School Master’. They are taken to the famed School for Good and Evil, where they are trained to be either storybook heroes or villains.
The two lead roles, Sophie and Agatha, were played by Sophia Anne Caruso and Sophia Wylie. Sophie, a young girl that cared mostly about beauty, wished to be whisked away so that she could live out her ‘Happily Ever After’, whereas Agatha, a grouchy, ‘ugly’ girl, did not believe in the school, nor wanted to be taken there. Yet, they were both kidnapped.
To their dismay, however, Agatha is dropped at the School for Good while Sophie is delivered to the School for Evil. Agatha protests, wishing to return to Gavaldon, while Sophie insists she belongs in Good. Both girls seek out School Master Rhian and the magical Storian pen.
The plot is developed further into the story, and both girls take on a mysterious, compelling adventure where they meet deadly enemies, seek truths, and find destinies.
The film includes magical creatures developed by CGI and can cause horrifying reactions for the audience. The costume designs are magnificent, giving the film a simultaneous dreamlike and gothic feel to express the differences between the schools. The costumes and the set designs both feel like they have come straight out of a fairy tale, proving just how much effort the design team have put in. Everything comes together nicely, including an excellent soundtrack, to make this fantastical world feel lived in. What’s more, the film shows how easy it can be to become arrogant regarding status and how that can drive one to ignorance and cruelty towards anyone who dares push them outside their comfort zone. Overall, the film focuses on friendship, and portrays the highs and lows Sophie and Agatha have to endure in order to maintain their bond.
Don’t miss a beat to buy tickets when The School For Good and Evil hits your local cinema. This movie is one of its own kind!
