Cinematically, it’s not too bad.
Story-wise, it’s terrible. Disgusting. Awful.
This movie tries to be meaningful and deep, but is just a bitter interpretation of race in America. As always, the sister bears the brunt of her brothers’ idiocy. Monk is self-absorbed and has a victim complex, which was the only comedic aspect of the movie. That, and the fact that they wanted us to emphasize with the brother who cheated on his wife.
They took a terrible approach to race relations and resorted to cliches- the irony. Some misogynistic comments present throughout the movie too (towards both Black and white women) Whenever they throw jabs at a white person, it’s usually aimed at a woman (eg: the “thin lips, bad kisser” comment).
Writers, take notes on what NOT to do when addressing heavy topics in a film. If you want people to emphasize with your cause, don’t resort to blatant misogyny. This film had important issues to address, but they watered it down with nonsensical screenwriting.
