This brilliantly written and directed film by Todd Fields, rich in specific detail, is first and foremost a slow descent, as the repercussion's of Lydia's machinations deform her life. It is a cautionary tale, that also serves as an ode to the artistry of musicians. Lydia's trajectory is mirrored by the stories of other artists, now gone, who also experienced grim occurances. It is somewhat detestable that Lydia is given more than enough rope to hang herself, as she stands as substitute for so many flawed, yet meritorious, people whose lives went up in flames.
