I have been playing WoW since it launched and there have been ups and downs over the years. The increasing levels of online hate are not actually based on the quality of the game. they seem to be more the result of online echo chambers and the money to be made on being angry and outraged.
Each expansion has had good and bad points. The ongoing negative is the amount of mindless grinding that is needed to get gear upgrades for non main characters. Your main get geared pretty well just following the storyline and running dungeons. Alts can get similar gear by grinding daily quests but it can be interminable. It has gotten better but the game is still not alt friendly.
The story for Shadowlands is not bad. All the hate directed at the evolving story is just fan boy butt hurt and my advice is that if you think you can craft a better storyline, please do so, otherwise quit whining. It is a minor annoyance that to get the entire story one must read the tie in novels, but as I enjoy reading, this is not an issue for me. I feel it allows for greater depth and nuance in the story by expanding into book form. For those that can't or don't like reading, the books are available on audio.
The graphics have just gotten better and better over time. They are not the same as something like Cyberpunk but are still great. The cinemas and voice acting are on point. The music is worth listening to even when not in game.
For a game I have been playing for over 20 years, if you count the pc games before, it holds up and has grown well. I don't agree with all the changes but is to be expected.
If you like MMORPGs, WoW continues to be a lot of fun. This is especially true when you have a group that you play with regularly.
