Spiderhead borrows heavily from Ex Machina, with similar themes of a flawed, megalomaniac genius utilising seemingly infinite resources to ruthlessly pursue his goals, until one seemingly weak subject of his experiments puts all the pieces of the puzzle together, and becomes determined to stop him. The pacing of Spiderhead also mimics Ex Machina, leaving the audience feeling like we are walking very familiar territory. Unfortunately, Spiderhead builds to its climax too slowly, so many will find the majority of the film boring. It’s plot line is also somewhat predictable. It’s not a complete waste of time, the performances of the principal cast are pretty good, it’s just not going to become a classic.
