I give this a full 5 stars, because not only am I thrilled to see a Halo story reaching mainstream media sources, but because it delivered everything I wanted.
I will admit I'm on the fence about the helmet removal. Another review here wrote that the helmet being removed "overstayed its welcome". I couldn't possibly agree more. I had a feeling before it even released that this would happen, I just didnt' expect it in the very first episode. I am disappointed in that.
The meta is, I suppose no actor can afford to be a faceless entity when trying to continue an acting career. That said, it just feels wrong to have John remove his helmet.
It was good enough that even my girlfriend (41) hasn't played a video game since N64 in college got into it and enjoyed it as well.
The Covenant was done well, though not perfect. I was truly taken aback by how well the San'Shyuum (Prophet) was rendered. The facial expressions and movements absolutely blew me away. It felt like just another actor on the screen, rather than a CGI character overlay. Massive kudos on that work.
The Sangheli (Elites) weren't done as well I think they could have been CGI-wise, but their movements and actions worked. I even recognized an iconic series of attack performed by one on the wall that resonated with the games.
I'm genuinely looking forward to the rest.
Just wish it was available on ANY other streaming platform... Paramount and Hulu's subscription + ads and refusal to work with any kind of ad-blocking just screams abhorent greed.
