I am blown away by Schroder, by Amity Gaige. How does a writer as young as Gaige was when she wrote it know parental devastation so well? Her protagonist, Schroder/Kennedy, separated from his own childhood by escape and re-creation, finds himself so desperately attached to his six-year-old daughter that he is compelled kidnap her during a custodial visit and strike out for the territory. It’s exhilarating and heartrending at a breakneck speed; a great read for any parent who ever thought they knew best.
