This isn’t really a review just an analysis of symbolism and some things I noticed on a rewatch. If thats technically a review then yea I guess this is a review. This Review contains HEAVY spoilers.
So I watched Nightcrawler for a second time, one of my favorite movies. It’s been a while since I’d last seen it, easily one of Jake Gyllenhaal’s best performance’s. An independent journalist or ‘Stringer’ goes around filming crime scenes to sell to news agencies goes above and beyond to film without letting legal or moral obstacles stand in his way.
On my second watch I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed by the plot, it moves quit fast and felt unrealistic at times but I think that’s the point so it’s okay. I also noticed possible symbolism throughout the film. The way Rick is unmotivated when money isn’t involved whilst Lou manipulates and abuses everyone around him to ensure he rises to the top with seemingly no moral quandary.
When Rick said ‘I could of had more couldn’t I?’ and Lou says yes, I realized it’s like he represents a mentality of 9 to 5 workers, who are motivated by money and money only without interest or a desire to find meaning or motivation in something more fulfilling, and then people like Lou Bloom who are vampires. They leech of other people pushing other under the water, essentially stopping at nothing to ensure his success even if it means the failure, and even harm of others. No matter the cost.
And one of the reasons Lou killed Rick was because he realized what Rick was, someone who didn’t have the skin to do what he does so he used him to further expand his brand at the cost of his life. Lou and Rick represent two extremes in the workplace, the puppet and the puppeteer. And the police showdown at the end was the puppet show.
