We rarely listen to pop music and are not too familiar with Jay Chou. However when browsing through Netflix we gave this show a try, seeing that it's a travel show and we were sheltered-in-place, hoping it would be less dry than other travel shows.
We were pleasantly surprised by how amusing the show is, the good relationships between the cast (many reality shows around the world like to focus on nastiness/pettiness). You see the cast has a relaxed camaraderie; they tease each other but also take care of each other. It's very comforting to watch a group of people introduce destinations in a light that normal tourists (even experienced Rick Steve style travelers like ourselves) never thought of seeing. (I've been to Paris many times, but now I would really love to try to go shoot some hoops there.)
One of the major highlights of this show are their magic tricks. Some of those tricks are just so impressive and put you in awe. You can expect at least 3+ tricks per episode. I was very impressed with how popstar Jay Chou is so good as a magician too.
The other highlight of the show, the Shenzhen I episode, was the focus on music. "Music is limitless" says Jay Chou. He advises those piano students and discusses with Lang Lang, that classical pianists/musicians should also branch into pop and other genres. In the end, it makes you a better artist. My kids have gone to our piano and started experimenting more with the piano after watching this episode (and they like to re-watch it, esp the duet between Jay Chou + Lang Lang and the duet between Jay Chou + the camerman during a magic performance).
We've started to listen to Jay Chou music now and can actually hear Chinese classical chord influence in his pop music. It its true that it sounds so much more different than typical pop, with those chords. Also, it was really impressive for myself and my kids to hear Jay Chou express his gratitude for his mom pushing him when he was young, while other kids played. It really goes to show you (and my kids) that you can only get so far without hard work/true effort.
This is one of the few reality TV shows that is funny, relaxing, expresses a very kind/positive side, expresses loyalty to those who forged the path with you, family appropriate and quite inspiring to all ages.
