In all honesty, the quality of You has significantly deteriorated in season 2. I would score season 1, four stars out of five and season 2, two stars out of five. As such, three out of five for the series so far.
You is a Netflix original with an interesting and unique premise. It takes the story of the obsessed stalker and flips it on its head. In You, we get to experience the perspective of the stalker, allowing us to delve into his thinking and rationalizations. At the same time, an interesting dynamic develops as we see the stalker, Joe, perform some generally good actions - especially with regards to Paco, the son of his abused next door neighbor. Overall, season 1 keeps you on your seat as you see Joe slowly lose his grip on his plan and his sanity whilst all the while making you wonder if Joe will finally get his just desert. Overall, Season 1 tells the story of a villian of a different kind, keeping you constantly on edge and excited for what happens next.
Now, season 2 is different. Unfortunately, to firmly express why it only deserves two stars, I need to get into some spoilers for both seasons. Here's the brief, spoiler free version: season 2 is season 1+ with worse writing, significant plot holes and, despite a strong focus on misdirection, a predictable final twist. In short, You should have ended with Season 1 and, if it had to continue, it shouldn't have been like this. I will admit that the writing ties up the loose ends at the end but it is loose ends that it created out of nowhere and many of them feel like they exist simply for a faux emotional ending (which season 1 pulled off). The final moments of season 2 are also pretty annoying as it clearly exists for season 3 to exist but the premise is relatively weak and it is going to have to flounder even more for relevant plot points.
Overall, season 1 yay, season 2 was boring and unnecessary.
For season 3 to work, the formula needs to change up.
In addition, (SPOILERS) Joe needs to stop getting away with everything so easily as he is now a Mary Sue at this point. Make him smarter or make consequences more real. Right now the show is stale and predictable. I didn't even care when Forty died because it was so dumb.
