The Cthulhu Mythos is alive and kicking in 2020, in the form of this truly original, contemporaneously topical, and entertaining show. Its allegorical depth coupled with the fun it has with the horror genre makes Lovecraft Country a worthy addition to HBO's growing pantheon of must-see programming. The screenplay moves quickly through its web of provocative social commentary and pure Arkham-style horror--and it is this balance that makes it work so well on both levels. The non-musical aural interludes are integral to the power of the piece--and the voices do not lie or disappoint. The family story is rich and drives the plot in a way more reminiscent of Toni Morrison than Lovecraft--and the marriage works. I'm invested and looking forward to more.
