I generally don't enjoy adult animation because the majority of them seem to follow the same basic formula where everyone seems to dislike each other & be some level of awful, while a lot of the jokes are for shock factor or to be "edgy."
This show is a refreshing departure from that. This young family of 3 (Josh, Emily, & their 5 yr old Candice) clearly love each other & their friends. Heck, their roommates are a divorced couple who are genuinely still friends. So far, every regular character & most one off characters have been really likeable. Yes, some of them are exaggerated caricatures of people you think of as living in LA (such as Candice's hipster hippy teacher) but it's not done in a mean way.
Every segment starts off depicting fairly standard daily life stuff for a couple in their early 30s raising a young kid in LA (down to them having roommates so they can afford an apartment in a better school zone). I think my favorite show beginning was the first segment of episode 2, Logan's Run. If you haven't seen any of this show, go watch that first. I had tears rolling down my cheeks. Then things get... weird in a surreal sort of way that somehow still relates to the rest of the segment & kinda makes sense in a way.
It's definitely a much appreciated departure from the standard that has been set for adult animation for the last decade or so. It's as wholesome & funny as Bob's Burgers, but as ridiculously surreal as the creator's previous project, Regular Show. I really hope they make more seasons.
