A totally involving film that takes the viewer through an intense experience, following young, working class soldiers showing enormous courage and loyalty in the face of indescribable scenes out of a picture of hell. A truly anti-war film with no hint of the usual ‘macho’ heroism. The film’s characters engage with the horrors of war in an understated, perhaps British way, but this in no way devalues the impact of the storytelling or the emotional scarring of the protagonists. The film making and special effects are amazing but it is the story being told that is the heart of the film.
