The opening can be a little traumatic if you’re not ready for it. It’s a good movie where young boys are becoming young men. I enjoyed the cultural aspects of it and how real it is portrayed. I think a lot of non native people grow up with expectations that everyone is like them.
Indigenous people are taught different lessons and Yes, there are times when some indigenous grow up in dysfunction or non function families. Some families are lost this way. The epidemic is how to cope with traumatic events.
Indigenous people knew what honor and shame was and they knew what behaviors dishonored themselves. All of that changed with assimilation because we were introduced to addiction when we knew nothing about those things. We are susceptible to the side effects a lot more than other races because we didn’t have a way to deal with them. Then our honor was taken away from us when the non indigenous took away our leaders, our land, our way of living.
There’s so much more to be said but this movie highlights a lot of those challenges we face now.
