No book has had such a profound, immediate effect on my person, both mentally and through my real world actions, as "Eating Animals" has.
I recommend this book to every single person I know, and everyone I don't as well. Every politician who makes animal husbandry laws should made to read this book, as a part of their education into something they likely know little about, before making such laws. He includes a handy section in the back labeled "Notes" where you can find all of his research; this isn't a book based on opinions, but steeped in facts.
I typically get through a book this size in less than a week (daily morning reading)
I am not kidding - I've spent over a month with this book- not because each page isnt engrossing (his writing is superb) but because our food reality printed in black and white becomes so stark, it's hard to swallow. The truth in print is actually harder to take than a PETA video. I had to give myself breaks to fully think about the realities presented. He asks a lot of questions in this book that deserve thought before answering.
Once I did, it was hard to even contemplate eating factory farmed meat. I am physically turned off by the meat products in the grocery store and I have fully lost my appetite for it. Full. Hard. Stop.
Thankfully, my husband is supportive of any food choices I make for us as long as they are healthy- and what could be healthier than not eating sick animals? As Foer puts it, their tortured flesh becomes our own.
It seems serendipitous that I finished this book the month before Thanksgiving, as that is where he ends it. We wont be having a Turkey this year, yet I couldn't be more excited for our meal.
Thank you for writing this book. You actually changed my life. Many blessings to you and your family.
