Amor Towles’s novel is rich, elegant, and charismatic as is the character of the Gentleman. Episode 1, despite costuming and sets, and an adequate performance from Ewan (who doesn’t really embody the necessary grandeur or complexity of the man), is not particularly intriguing or enigmatic but, unfortunately, rather mundane. It may play all right as a stand-alone tv series but it pales in comparison to the written version.

Pretty basic, stereotypical characters and little evidence of strong dance training. The principal “dancers” lack the flexibility, posture, and poise of true ballet dancers. Disappointingly mediocre.

Expected more from anything with James Nesbitt in it. Plot so weak and full of holes.
