[spoilers]
While I appreciate that the film is based on a real marriage, I find the depiction of that marriage in the film incredible. Are we really supposed to feel something for a man who was complicit in many murders because he wanted to steal his wife and her family’s birthright? Are we really supposed to believe he deeply loved a family he was killing? I think the attempt to ‘redeem’ him, which falls short as he cannot admit his final role in poisoning his wife, is also not credible. There is some great acting in this. There is also some wonderful cinematography. However, the script is slow, the characters unsympathetic and even the poor Osage are not really painted in any depth other than as noble and reticent stoics. I wanted to like the film. But it feels like a documentary would have served their story better than Casino with ‘Indians’.
