I liked the movie though it was often very painful to watch. I liked the humour; often laughing is the only way to cope with injustice. It reminds us to breathe. The characters Tony Lip and Dr. Shirley help each other and through their friendship, they both change for the better. It's a story about standing up for yourself and standing up for others; just because people label us are this or that doesn't mean we have to buy into it. The racism portrayed in the film was very disturbing. For example, not letting Dr. Shirley eat at the restaurant or even use the bathroom, while applauding him on stage. And no one spoke up, not one diner spoke up. But Dr. Shirley spoke up for himself and Tony spoke up and I admired them for it.
