Jokes fall flat, disorganized, probably written by 50 y/o out of touch boomers, a little creepy. Has some good points but for a show marketed as pre-mystery gang Scooby-Doo, none of the characters have the same personality that makes them, well, them. This probably would have been a better show if the characters kept the same personality or it was an entirely different show tbh.
I think the whole race argument is dumb. You shouldn’t care that their skin colour changed. This whole situation kind of reminds me of the new live action Ariel, but the difference here is that Ariel has the same personality, nothing has changed about her, and she’s beautiful, but here the characters lack their original personality. You can make edgy humor and jokes with the same personality. Velma is witty and a smart know-it-all. A classic “um actually” but in a helpful way (women in STEM fr.) Shaggy is literally a stoner, the joke is there. Daphne is a damsel in distress, a gold mind for classic rich white women tears trope. Fred is a walking himbo obsessed with traps (traps…aye? More jokes there for you). If you would have put a group of teenagers in a room to write this show, they could have done a better job at knocking off political correctness balanced with edgy humor. I literally just did it for you.
In short, Stop hiding behind race, stop hiding behind racism, get better, younger writers. We’re tired of performative activism.
