I recently watched "The Three-Body Problem" on Netflix, and I must say, it was a disappointing experience. The show's writing felt lazy and uninspired, relying heavily on far-fetched ideas that were poorly executed. The casting was also a letdown, with performances that failed to bring the characters to life. The actors and actresses that they chose to cast were not believable in their roles and many were unlikable. *cough* Auggie *cough* there was also so much gaslighting going on between the characters that none of the relationships felt genuine.
One of the biggest issues with the show was its timeline and pacing. The story jumped around haphazardly, making it difficult to follow the narrative. This lack of cohesion made it hard to stay engaged with the show, as it felt disjointed and unbelievable. We went from hatching an ‘impossible’ idea, to execution of said idea the next scene. Not that it is integral to enjoying a show, but it was also very confusing about where the characters were. New York? England? Panama? South America? China? There were not a lot of indications or clues on how, when, where a character was.
Furthermore, the infeasibility of some of the choices the characters made, even for a sci-fi, was insurmountable. The boat scene felt like it was just a ploy to show some cool CGI and have a little bit of gore when in reality, even in a world faced with possible alien invasion, there is no way that murdering hundreds of women and children would get past the highest authority. You can’t conduct a massacre all for the sake of a little intel. Please correct me if I’m naive, couldn’t they have just landed a helicopter of high-level SWAT team type guys and arrest the dude? Didn’t seem like there was a large security force on the boat, who would’ve stopped them… Plus, one of their major issues was the potential destruction of the ‘hard drive’ during this mission using other methods, so they go with the plan of slicing everything in half, even potentially said hard drive, and hoping they got lucky finding it amongst the gigantic pile of destruction and chaos that they left. Possibly in the books this made more sense, but the morals, ethics, and thought process behind this decision did not make sense. And then Auggie just gaslights everyone about how they are OK with murdering people when it was her technology and by her hand that murdered everyone so… Yeah. And then when Wade is looking for someone who fits his criteria to send to space, his friends must have said, or what I felt we were lead to believe, ‘oh I know a guy’ and then when Wade says he’s gonna ask dear old dying Will to do it, they go noooooo not him!!! But didn’t you just say, hey I know a guy?? 🙄🙄 Also dude, I think your GF would have appreciated the 20mil over some piece of paper saying she ‘owns’ a star. That came off as moronic and not romantic.
Overall, "The Three-Body Problem" on Netflix was a disappointing watch. With lazy writing, far-fetched ideas, poor casting, and jumpy incoherent pacing, it failed to live up to its potential and left much to be desired.
