I won’t say it’s a bad game. I didn’t DNF which is more than I can say for many games. But I expected much more.
The bad:
- Combat. I don’t like button mashing, and evading. I like some strategy to be present in combat, and it’s kind of what I expect in a Final Fantasy. That seems to have been thrown out the window. No status effects, no elements, boss battles are flashy but become boring quickly once you figure out the boss.
- The sidequests. Only two types. Beat a monster, or find some item that’s just marked on your map. I like that they expand on the story and world building though.
- The pacing. Game is depressing at all times. There’s no whimsy, which again I expect from a Final Fantasy. Story is just dark, which I like, but even in dark stories you can find time to fun. Only fun character is Charon and she’s grumpy.
- Plot twists somewhat predictable. Might just be that I’m too old and have seen too many shows and played too many games.
The good:
- Story and world building are generally good. It kept me hooked and it’s the one reason I finished the game. I like that the world is vast and you can learn more about it the more you do and the more you pay attention. You are expected to do some reading to fully understand stuff, which I don’t mind but I see how other people might not like it.
- Visuals and music are masterfully done. Some people have criticisms but I generally liked these. Really great artists involved in this game.
- Characters are likable. Except Clive, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually liked a Final Fantasy main, so I can forgive this.
Ok game, Worth looking into it if you already have a PS5, but don’t buy one just to play this game.
