I don’t know if it’s just me, but the movie didn’t even come close to capturing the emotional, complex story portrayed in the book. It felt incredibly rushed and didn’t cover the important parts that made the narrative more relatable, emotional, and heart-touching. The story was supposed to delve into themes like trauma, PTSD, and domestic violence, and I’m still left wondering where those elements went. As for the characters, aside from Alyssa and Marshall, they were a complete disaster. Ryle’s casting was solid, but it still didn’t pan out. I can’t figure out why Lily’s character keeps saying “Yeah,” “OMG,” and other phrases (the kind you typically hear from bored 16-year-olds trying too hard to sound enthusiastic), and those forced laughs only made everything ten times worse. How do I explain the major quotes from the book that I fell in love with when they were shown in this movie? It’s like trying to salvage badly burned pasta with cheese—it serves no purpose and is just there. Disappointment doesn’t even begin to describe what I felt while watching it.
