in comparison to the classic 2004 film, this was an absolute flop. ALSO, ITS A MUSICAL!! i went and saw this movie with a couple of my girlfriends, and we were not aware that it was a musical as it was not advertised in any of the trailers we’ve come across.
ACTING
the acting was not the best. it felt like the characters would rush into their lines, and some iconic scenes were rushed over which wouldn’t give it enough recognition and credit from the classic 2004 film. throughout the film, i’d sometimes struggle to understand what the actors were saying because they were talking so quickly, one after the other, which left me lost. the classic scenes such as the choreography for ‘jingle-bell rock’ wasn’t used, and the scene when the girls would tell regina that she couldn’t sit with them was extremely anticlimactic. some of the actors didn’t portray their character well, and were over exaggerated. i was excited and happy to see a few of the original 2004 cast members, which was what made me stay in the cinema and to continue watching. overall, although the lines were fast paced, the movie felt like it was dragging.
SONGS + VISUALS
in general, there were so many songs that felt unnecessary, and at some points, felt inappropriate and did not flow well with the scene. like out of nowhere they’d start singing when it seemed like they didn’t need to. for example, when cady first encounters aaron samuels, the song that came along in the scene was so unnecessary, the audience in my cinema groaned (iykyk). and when regina was first introduced (with a song of-course), my friends and i couldn’t help but laugh because it was so cringey. i understand that it’s a musical, and that songs are going to be apart of it, but the execution was so poorly done.
TAKEAWAY
if you like musicals, it’s fun and the visuals such as the costuming are vibrant. there’s a lot of diversity which is amazing, and i was super happy to see it throughout the whole movie. but other than that, its not that great. it’s just unnecessary songs every 5-10 minutes, and the iconic scenes that made the original mean girls the film that we love were not given the spotlight/recognition that it deserved.
will not be watching again.
